Salloumi is a video sharing website where users can upload, view and share video clips. Salloumi was created in mid-March 2008 by a group of Kuwaiti users. The service uses Adobe Flash technology to display a wide variety of user-generated video content, including movie clips, TV clips and music videos, as well as amateur content such as videoblogging and short original videos. Unregistered users can watch most videos on the site, while registered users are permitted to upload an unlimited number of videos. The uploading of videos containing pornography, nudity, defamation, harassment, commercial advertisements and material encouraging criminal conduct is prohibited. Related videos, determined by title, description and tags, appear onscreen to the right of a given video. In July 2008, Salloumi was hosting about 6,000 videos (requiring about 60 gigabytes of storage space), and had about 1,000 user accounts. As of August 2008, Salloumi is not, yet, profitable. Its bandwidth reached 4 terabytes a month.

Terms of Service

Users may upload videos only with permission of the copyright holder and people depicted in the videos. Pornography, nudity, defamation, harassment, commercial advertisements and material encouraging criminal conduct are prohibited. The uploader grants Salloumi a license to distribute and modify the uploaded material for any purpose; this license terminates when the uploader deletes the material from the site. Users may view videos on the site as long as they agree to the terms of service; downloading through one's own means or copying of the videos is not permitted.

Video format

Uploading Video on Salloumi's video playback technology is based on Macromedia's Flash Player. This technology allows the site to display videos with quality comparable to more established video playback technologies (such as Windows Media Player, QuickTime and RealPlayer) that generally require the user to download and install a web browser plugin in order to view video. Flash also requires a plug-in, but Adobe considers the Flash 7 plug-in to be present on about 90% of online computers. Users can view videos in windowed mode or full screen mode and it is possible to switch modes during playback without reloading it due to the full-screen function of Adobe Flash Player 9. The video can also be played back with third-party media players such as GOM Player, gnash, VLC as well as some ffmpeg-based video players. Videos uploaded to Salloumi are limited to a file size of 1024MB (1 Gigabyte). One video at a time can be uploaded through the standard interface. Salloumi converts videos into the Flash Video format after uploading. Salloumi accepts uploaded videos in the .WMV, .AVI, .MOV, MPEG , .RM, .RMVB, .DIVX, .3GP, .MP4 and many other formats.

Video Fetching

In order to make it easier for users to upload more videos, two new techniques were added to the website. URL fetching where users can upload their videos to their own web spaces, and fetch their videos directly from their website using the high-speed connection of the two exchanging servers. The other method is fetching from Youtube, Metacafe, and Break websites where a user can copy/paste the video page URL and paste it on Salloumi's upload page where, then, the video of that page will be fetched using the high-speed connection of the two exchanging servers too.
